The interaction or cooperation of two or more processes to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.
Laughter Synergy combines the powerful health benefits of laughter yoga, creativity and playfulness to produce a wellness program beneficial to the whole person.
Laughter Yoga is an exercise program developed in 1995 by Indian physician Dr. Madan Kataria where anyone can laugh without relying on humor, jokes or comedy. Science has proven that our body and mind will respond the same way, whether we laugh by choice or laugh in response to a humorous stimulus.
Laughter yoga combines laughter exercises with yoga breathing techniques, resulting in more fresh oxygen to our body and brain. Cortisol decreases, lowering blood pressure and muscle tension. Simultaneously, our brain releases the ‘feel good’ chemicals dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins.
Dopamine enhances learning, motivation, and attention, oxytocin helps people feel more connected with one another, serotonin aids in feelings of well-being and endorphins aid in pain endurance.
Other laughter benefits include boosting our immune system, both by increasing the production of the cells that help protect our body from disease as well as by helping to move lymph through our body through muscle movement used in laughing, a reduction in fat build-up around abdominal organs, improved sleep and digestion.
Laughter exercises can be performed alone or in groups, sitting, standing or recumbent. The benefit of laughter exercises in a group setting is the activation of mirror neurons, enabling each participant to assist in and benefit from each other's laughter. This, in turn, fosters social connectedness and team bonding.
Creativity is the production of new ideas. At the whole-person perspective, creative thinking leads to innovation and problem-solving. At the cellular level, new ideas are translated as new neural pathways. As brains age and naturally shrink, the production of new neural connections can help keep brains healthy longer.
Playfulness is a behavior often attributed to children and becomes lost in adulthood as the more serious aspects of life become dominant. But playfulness aids in learning and problem-solving, improves relationships and contributes to our mental and physical resiliency. Incorporating more playfulness in daily activities reduces stress and helps maintain a more relaxed state of mind.
